About Us

History-

Originally founded in 1989, Coastal Designer Rugs began as a full-time hobby supplying friends and neighbors with quality handmade custom area rugs. The original owner's experience in the carpet industry dates to years earlier with his involvement in carpet installation for many New England firms.

At the beginning of 2000, expansion was in the company's heart. New 'state-of-the-art' manufacturing equipment and updated techniques were introduced into the company. Two new employees, brothers, were hired, each with different, yet complementary talents. Years of experience, coupled with the latest techniques and equipment, has made Coastal Designer Rugs one of the most advanced custom rug studios in the country.

The original owner has since retired, but not without passing on his knowledge and expertise.. The business transfered from one family to another.

Employees-

Each employee is vital to the operation and resulting quality of the company.

The Artisan-

Bruce is the Chief Designer and Rug Sculptor. He is responsible for generating and expanding ideas as well as tantalizing clients with intriguing design possibilities. He may suggest that more exotic materials replace the typical carpet to add more detail and depth. His flair for art is represented by his numerous original ideas for complementary and alternative options based on customer requirements/requests.

Bruce is also responsible for the carving of the sculpted rugs. He transforms 'raw,' one-dimensional inlaid rugs, into fine works of art. His ability is reflected in all the pieces he creates, including his personal clay sculptures and oil paintings. Bruce is always excited to consult on ideas for various areas of your home, boat, car, etc. and views every new project as an exciting opportunity to showcase his talents.

Credentials-

Bruce graduated high school as a member of the National Honor Society and valedictorian and College as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society with high honors and with an Associates Degree in Nuclear Engineering. Later, after taking art courses and pursuing art as a beloved hobby, Bruce attended an internationally renowned school specifically for custom rug production and sculpting followed by his enrollment in the National Association of Rug Makers and Sculptors (NARMS). He is the 2006 NARMS First place winner for rug sculpting and a 2004 finalist.

The Technician-

Stephen is the Production Engineer and Project Manager. He is responsible for preliminary layout and assembly (the 'rough stuff'). He assures that pieces are constructed and assembled to exacting standards. His work is usually hidden from view on the finished product but is essential to its quality. Stephen also handles the bids for both our wholesale and retail clients. This involves transforming Bruce's creative design ideas or customer's line drawing into 'to size' polished bids and rug patterns, ready for manufacture. Stephen enjoys talking about all things technical and is available to talk to customers about any questions or concerns that they may generate in this regard.

Credentials-

Stephen also graduated high school as a member of the National Honor Society and valedictorian and proceeded onto secondary school, pursuing multiple related degrees. Stephen currently holds an Associates of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Along with this, Stephen has received a Certificate for training in Computer Aided Drafting and has been with the company since it's expansion in 2000.

The Owner-

Katie provides company direction and support and is ready to field any of your corporate questions and concerns. Katie handles executive and clerical duties and is responsible for Company finances, project documentation, and customer relations.

Credentials-

Katie is professionally trained and worked in the secretarial field for many years, during which time she was taught many of the skills needed for success.
